What is the future of electricity?

Electricity started as an idea. Then as a lightning bolt hitting a kite and then Michael Faraday discovered the fundamentals of creating electricity through magnets and copper wire. In order for the earliest homes with electricity to get it the wires had to be covered with cloth and then metal. Even with its discovery and creation, electricity only ended up in half of American homes and it took FDR’s Electrification Act in 1936 to get electricity in 85% of homes.

Within those times we’ve gone from using kinetic energy just cranking levers and pushing vehicles. To lighting coal on fire and making energy that way. Now we burn oil, move water and collect wind to power the world that is now dependent on technology’s existence. As Climate change becomes an unignorable issue the question a lot of people are asking, what’s the future of technology and how can we make sure we continue to have access to it.

Some people suggest we go full renewable energy but the issue with that is its ability to consistently produce enough technology. How will the wind blow or the water flow during a drought? How can we be dependent on solar power during the winter? Where most states say goodbye to the sun for months at a time. These are issues we face for most renewable energies but not nuclear energy. The issue with that though is its lethalness.

When a nuclear powerplant is created its environment becomes toxic, employees get sick, and we need no reminder of what happens when it overheats (Chernobyl). But the issue still lies of the fact that we need a new source of energy to be dependent on other than fossil fuels. When talking about the use of nuclear energy the question we really have to ask ourselves is if we’re okay with sacrificing some people for the greater good of us all.
